BRADFORD YOUNG AND THE VISUAL ART OF BLACK CARE

Introduction

Screening and masterclass with the award-winning and Oscar-nominated cinematographer and installation artist, Bradford Young. This research project and event was prompted by the desire to continue to explore the lineage of what we came to recognize as the “Howard University Pedagogy Lab,” i.e. the filmmakers and visual artists who had been trained by LA Rebellion filmmaker Haile Gerima at Howard University. It was Young himself, in a series of interviews, that highlighted the importance of recognizing the lineage he comes from, describing it specifically as a pedagogy, which offers the foundation for what he also calls “black intentionality”.
